I am a “do it yourselfer” from childhood. I have always thought that, given enough time and instructions, I could do anything anyone else could do. Given this mindset, I found myself at an auction with the winning bid of $6.00 for a broken down recliner, thus began my upholstery career in 1983.
Having no place else to work, I spread an old blanket on my living room floor, and using my kitchen table for cutting, after a mere two weeks and a lot of frustration, it was recovered. I made a lot of mistakes including, buying too much material, and taking all the pieces off the chair at once. I really knew how to take things apart. . . getting them back together was the trick. Having no formal training, I made every mistake possible so you don’t have to. While operating a successful business for over 25 years, I developed a step-by-step system for measuring, marking, sewing, attaching, and many other areas of upholstery. As my son, Ryan, has now joined me in this venture, we are both enthusiastic about teaching people to do projects that were previously only accomplished by “professionals”.
After working in a fabric store for a year, and helping customers every day with their upholstery projects, I realized that people “wanted” to enjoy custom furniture at a bargainprice, but were intimidated because the available books were all “generic”, evidently assuming that all furniture is one style.
